Meet The Illustrator

By Johnny Strader •

Hello to all of our lovely followers. We hope you are having a fantastic holiday season and are ready for a fabulous New Year. To start the new year off with a bang, we wanted to introduce you to the amazing and talented person that brings life to each character in Cotton: the little plant that snored.

Meet our artist Monica Sanchez

Monica

Monica is 26 years old and grew up in Long Beach, California. It was such a pleasure to be able to sit down and talk with Monica about her passion for art.

What is a hobby of yours besides painting and illustrating?

My hobbies include singing karaoke when it is possible and discovering new music.

How does it feel illustrating a book for children to see?

It does put a bit of pressure on me, knowing this is a book for children. They're so blunt, and I'm already critical of my work. I've enjoyed the challenge so far and am excited to see what the kids think of the book.

What are your inspirations when creating your art?

I feel what inspires me most, depending on what I'm trying to convey, is mainly from my memories and experiences. If I don't feel like its something I've personally lived out, I feel that music helps me envision colors and correct composition to invoke a feeling for the viewer. So, for example, this very book I feel like I reached back into childhood memories of playing in the grass and smelling the air of recent rain, Or watching my grandparents tend to rose bushes. I think of that, and I see the colors of the time of day and do my best to use them in my work.

What are your future plans for your art?

I have so many plans for my art. I plan on continuing curating art shows every few months to help push the exposure of local talent in Las Vegas, and I want to start a line of clothing that supports and brings attention to non-profit organizations. Helping those in need is an essential part of my life.

Which of the characters was your favorite to work on so far?

My favorite book character that I've worked on has to be Ms. Prissy, the owl. She's very expressive and sassy, so I get to be dramatic with her face. A close second is Mr. Sun.

Lastly what is your favorite meal/food dish?

My favorite food is probably salmon, sushi, and chocolate.
