By Johnny Strader •

Many of you might have been asking yourselves. "Who is behind this adorable little story and cute illustrations."

Well, over the next couple of weeks, we will be introducing you to the team that is bringing Cotton: the little plant that snored to life.

Meet our author Johnny Strader

Johnny Strader

Johnny is 59 years old. He was born in Florida and has lived in the Las Vegas area for most of his life. I had the pleasure of talking with Johnny to ask him a few questions to share with you all about his life, so I hope you enjoy

What is a hobby of yours besides writing?

I often enjoy studying health, nutrition, psychology, and physiology. Still, in my spare time, I enjoy developing mechanical equipment that can improve the quality of life at home and work.

When did you start writing, and why?

I believe my first attempt at writing was when I was about 6 or 7 years old. For some bizarre reason, I had a strong desire to copy the entire book of Genesis from the Bible. Unfortunately, I kept getting stuck on the part about the fruit. So eventually, I put it aside and went on to less complicated forms of writing. As I grew older, I saw the entertainment industry and its potential to educate and inspire people. It was so fascinating to me that in 1996, I created a small film production company with the intent of promoting thought-provoking storylines. I studied scriptwriting and, after five years, had completed several screenplays. I later decided to expand my 100-page scripts into full-length novels. This process took a lot of time and research, but it also gave me the freedom to elaborate on the message.

What was your inspiration going into this book?

When little Cora James was born (my girlfriend Shari's first granddaughter), I had been working diligently on a psychological tale that I was having trouble completing. Because of its complexity, I would go through periods of writing in circles, and I knew that I needed something to help ease my focus. Shari suggested that I write a children's book for little Cora. I loved it, and it was perfect! But I had no idea where to begin. Then about two weeks later, my mother and I were reminiscing about her years of research in the cotton fields. She told me that even though it was at times sweltering, and quite messy, it was also quiet and peaceful. I thought for a moment and jokingly asked, "So… I guess you didn't hear any cotton plants snoring?" We both had a good laugh, and the rest is now history.

What message do you want children to receive from reading your book?

There will always be bullies and those who like to ridicule. But, if you learn to embrace your apparent shortcomings or embarrassing moments, you will begin to recognize that there are great opportunities hidden within every situation. Opportunities to strengthen you and prepare you for your higher purpose. For the respect and success that you rightfully deserve in life.

What are your future plans once Little Cotton is finished?

I want to inspire others, especially our youth, in discovering their full potential regardless of their economic background.

Lastly, what is your favorite cheat meal?

That's easy! Veggie-rice crust-pizza with pineapple.
